The story revolves around Linghu Chong as he makes a name for himself in the martial arts realm. He is the eldest of Hua Shan Sect. He has a carefree personality but has mediocre martial arts skills. However, he chances upon an opportunity to master the Dugu Nine Swords Technique and also to obtain a manuscript that holds the secret to the martial arts techniques of various sects. This invites the suspicions and jealousy from his own master who expel him from Hua Shan Sect.

Linghu Chong is childhood sweetheart with Yue Ling Shan, his master's daughter. Linghu Chong is heartbroken to learn that Yue Ling Shan has fallen for Lin Pin Zhi instead. However, Linghu Chong soon meets Ren Ying Ying and he also crosses paths with Dong Fang Bu Bai. Through their encounters, he begins to realize that his perception of what is good and evil is not always so straightforward.

Swordsman is a 2013 Chinese television series adapted from the novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. The series is written and produced by Yu Zheng.The story deviates significantly from the novel with Dongfang Bubai not depicted as a castrated man but as a woman in a romantic affair with Linghu Chong instead. Nonetheless, it was a commercial success as it had number one ratings on both streaming site and television.
