Moon Embracing the Sun (Korean: 해를 품은 달) is a 2012 South Korean television drama series. starring Kim Soo-hyun, Han Ga-in, Kim Min-Seo and Jung Il-woo. It is written by Jung Eun-gwol and it is adapted from the novel of the same name. The drama is about a love story between a fictional King Lee Hwon(Kim Soo Hyun) and a female shaman Yeon Woo(Han Ga-In) in a Korean traditional palace. There are also some elements of conspiracy and conflicts due to the infighting amongst those with political powers.
The drama was widely popular in South Korea and it reached a peak of 42.2%. It won various TV drama awards such as Best Drama and Best Actor at the 48th Baeksang Arts Awards as well as the Drama of the Year award at the MBC Drama Awards.
Yeon-woo and Crown Prince Lee Hwon fall in love. Prince Yang Myung, the Crown Prince's half-brother, has also fallen in love with Yeon-Woo. However, his love is not reciprocated by Yeon-Woo. The King is impressed by Yeon-Woo's intelligence and chooses her to be Crown Prince Lee Hwon's wife.
The Queen Mother secretly orders to cast a deadly curse on Yeon-woo as she does not want Yeon Woo to be Lee Hwon’s Wife. Yeon-woo is diagnosed with an unknown illness. As a result, she is stripped off her title of Crown Princess and is expelled from the palace. Crown Prince Lee Hwon is unwilling to marry others beside Yeon Woo. He refuses to marry by citing an unnamed illness.
Eight years later, Lee Hwon is now king. Yeon-woo becomes Shaman Wol and ironically the Queen Mother calls her to the palace so that she can cure the King's supposed illness. The King is struck by Wol's strong resemblance to Yeon-woo. Political infighting continues within the palace as King Lee Hwon fights for his throne and the woman he loves.
