In 1962 British Hong Kong, Chow Mo-wan (Tony Leung) and Su Li-Zhen(Maggie Cheung) rented rooms in adjacent apartments. Each had a spouse who worked and left them alone on overtime shifts. Chow Mo-Wan and Su Li-Zhen were often alone in their rooms and they were initially friendly to each other. They grew closer as they realized that their spouses were having an affair.

In the Mood for Love (Chinese: 花样年华) is a 2000 romantic drama film written, produced and directed by Wong Kar-wai. It stars Tony Leung as Chow Mo-Wan and Maggie Cheung as Su Li-Zhen. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 20 May 2000.Tony Leung won Best Actor, hence becoming the first Hong Kong actor to win the acting award at Cannes Film Festival. The film is often listed as one of the greatest films of all time and one of the major works in Asian cinema. It was voted the second-best film of the 21st century by 177 film critics from around the world in a 2016 survey conducted by the BBC.
