Paatal Lok (translated: Underworld) is a police-based crime thriller written by Sudip Sharma. It stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Swastika Mukherjee, Ishwak Singh, and Abhishek Banerjee.It is about a Delhi cop named Hathi Ram Chaudhary who is disillusioned about his job until one day a high profile case lands on him which leads him to a rabbit hole of deceit and hidden motive.The investigative drama manages to hold viewers’ attention as the main protagonist attempts to solve the mystery behind the case.
The series received rave reviews from critics, praising the performances of the protagonist Jaideep Ahlawat and other lead characters. The storyline, wriitng and direction are similarly praised as well. Variety magazine listed Paatal Lok as one of the best international TV shows of 2020. The Indian Express also lists Paatal Lok as one of the Top 10 Indian Web Series of 2020. Jaideep Ahlawat won the Best Actor at both the Indian Television Academy Award 2021 and the Filmfare OTT Awards 2020.

The series is inspired by the traditional concepts of Svarga, Dharti and Paatal (heaven, earth and the hell) and the four estates.Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat) has given up on his dream of being a successful cop since he is way past his prime.
The cop laments that he is a permanent member of the Paatal lok (underworld or netherworld according to ancient Hindu scriptures), and can only view Swarg lok (heaven where successful people reside) from a distance. He gets what he asks for as a pass to the upper realm in the form of a high profile crime case since it is the first time he is assigned to a case so important and solving it will earn him great honour and respect.
The cop investigates four criminal suspects — Vishal Tyagi (Abhishek Banerjee), Tope Singh (Jagjeet Sandhu), Kabir M. (Aasif Khan), and Cheeni (Mairembam Ronaldo Singh) for a failed assasination attempt on prominent TV journalist Sanjeev Mehra. However, things are not so straightforward and his instincts tells him to look into the suspects’ lives. He then rediscovers his responsibility as a cop, his place in the grand scheme of things and his meaning in life.
