In sixth-century China, Emperor Xiaoxuan ordered the execution of General Lin Xie, his family, his soldiers and Crown Prince Qi. Secretly surviving the massacre was Lin Xie's son, Lin Shu. He underwent medical treatment which changed his appearance entirely and left him in a weakened state. Lin Shu changed his name to Mei Chang Su and later became the chief of the pugilist world and established the Jiangzuo Alliance. Twelve years later, Lin Shu decided to covertly assist Prince Jing to ascend the throne and wisely rid the court of all scheming officials. When Prince Jing became the Emperor, he named the newly merged militia  "Chang Lin" army, in honor of Lin Shu and Mei Chang Su.
 

Nirvana in Fire (Chinese: 琅琊榜) is a 2015 Chinese historical drama based on Hai Yan's book Lang Ya Bang (瑯琊榜). It was directed by Kong Sheng and Li Xue. It stars Hu Ge as Mei Changsu, Liu Tao as Princess Nihuang and Wang Kai as Prince Jing. The drama was one of the recipients of the Outstanding Television Drama Award at the Flying Apsaras Awards, the highest government honor given for outstanding achievement in China's television industry. Kong Sheng also won the Outstanding Director Award for his work in Nirvana in Fire.In 2016, SARFT recognized the series as one of the top 20 most outstanding dramas of the year in China. It was also nominated for the Magnolia Award for Best Television Series at the 22nd Shanghai Television Festival. Hu Ge won the Best Actor Awards at the 22nd Shanghai Television Festival and the 28th Golden Eagle Awards.
